At the beginnen of the war both the union and the confederate states did not use there cavalry a lot. scouting, guarding supply trains and railroads, and providing escorts. all this jobs were left to the generals. so basicly the cavalry was only used in battles as shok troops. thay learned this war tactics from the romans. the foot soldiers did not like the cavalry that much they would say that thay were "dandies on horseback" thay never saw much of the fighting
