Game Ratings Do you wonder what those rating symbols mean on games? The following web sites may help to clear up some of the mysteries of the games your children play. “The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) assigns computer and video game content ratings, for the interactive entertainment software industry. The ESRB ratings are designed to provide consumers, especially parents, with concise, impartial guidance about the age-appropriateness and content of computer and video games so that they can make informed purchase decisions about the games they deem suitable for their children and families.” from the ESRB Thank you to Christine Seddon, Marketing Manager at ESRB, who was very helpful when I was gathering information for this web page. I asked for permission to display their logo and she also sent a copy of the game ratings document and a link to their Family Discussion Guide, which is an excellent resource for families. The ESRB web site is very informative; please make use of it when deciding what games your children play. ESRB Game Ratings and Content Descriptors (PDF) (The booklet above is published by the ESRB and the national PTA. It offers excellent information and directions for using parental controls on popular consoles and in Windows Vista.) Webcast of ESRB and PTA: Parental Guidance on Video Game Ratings, Parental Controls and Online Safety "What They Play" explains why games have certain ratings designations. Reviewers actually play the games and report incidences of violence, foul language, etc., that give the games the ratings they have. Games are sorted by system and games are reviewed to assist parents in making choices.
An article by the company's co-founder, John Davison, on the "Today Show" web site.
This is the web site mentioned in the article in the ESRB guide, "Advice from GamerDad about Playing Video Games Online." The web site is geared to parents and questions/concerns they have regarding video games for their children. The site is pretty straight-forward and doesn't have an agenda other than assisting parents. It seems to focus on parents who play video games, or who are well-informed about games. It's not aimed exclusively at these parents, though, and they will answer your questions.
Children's Health Kid's Health is an excellent resource for childrens' health information. It is not meant to replace the family doctor, but does explain health and nutrition information in easy to understand terms. There are three sites to choose from: Parents, Kids and Teens. Information is reviewed by doctors and other health professionals (there is a very long list of reviewers on the web site). |

A Guide for Parents Instant Message, Chat and Text Message Abbreviations (What do all those letters mean?) There are several sites included, as there are some acronyms on some lists and not on others, although the Unabridged Dictionary is pretty expansive. On all of the sites, most expletives have been deleted or changed to less offensive language! (includes emoticons or "smileys")
